Despite receiving a few offers from small colleges to play football, Hanson was more focused on his goal to pursue a career in sportscasting.

This landed the budding journalist at Syracuse University. There Hanson walked on to the football team in the Fall of 1989 as a long snapper. He also served as a wide receiver and defensive back on the scout team, once lining up with future NFL superstar Marvin Harrison. Scott was selected as Defensive Scout Team player of the year in 1991 by then graduate assistant coach, Scott Pioli. Hanson's career at Syracuse ended with a Syracuse Orangemen victory in the 1993 Fiesta Bowl. Academically he made the Dean's List all four years and graduated Cum Laude from Syracuse's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
