Raymondo Antoine McDonald (born September 2, 1984) is an American football defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). McDonald played college football for the University of Florida, and was a member of a BCS National Championship team. Thereafter, he was selected by the 49ers in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft.[1]

Early years[]

McDonald was born in Pahokee, Florida in 1984.[2] He attended Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, Florida,[3] and played high school football for the Glades Central Raiders.[4] As a junior in 2000, he was a starting defensive lineman for the Glades Central Raiders team that won the Florida Class 3A state championship, and was named Palm Beach County Player of the Year as a senior in 2001.[4]

College career[]

McDonald received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida,[4] where he played for coach Ron Zook and coach Urban Meyer's Florida Gators football teams from 2002 to 2006.[5] The Gators coaching staff decided to redshirt him as a true freshman in 2002, and worked with the Gators scout team.[4] McDonald was a team captain of the 2006 Gators squad that finished 13–1 and defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 41–14 in the 2007 BCS National Championship Game to win the Gators' second national championship.[5] Following the 2006 season, he was recognized as a first-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) selection.[5]

Professional career[]

The San Francisco 49ers selected McDonald in the third round (ninety-seventh pick overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft,[6] and he has played for the 49ers during the four seasons since 2007.[7] To date, McDonald has played in 71 games with 24 starts, and has an interception return and a recovered fumble return, both resulting in touchdowns. In 2011 he signed a 5 year 20 million dollar extension with 7 million dollars in guaranteed money.[2] McDonald registered a career-high 5.5 sacks and 39 tackles during the 2011 regular season. On November 16, 2012, McDonald was fined $21,000 for a head shot against the St. Louis Rams.[8]

Football family[]

McDonald's father, Ray McDonald, Sr., was a four-year letterman for the Florida Gators from 1982 to 1985 and was a standout wide receiver on the 1985 Gators team that finished 9–1–1.[4][5]
