In his first season as quarterbacks coach, starting quarterback Drew Brees passed for 5,069 yards, just shy of the NFL record, but then in the 2011-2012 season Drew Brees broke the record for the most passing yards in a single season, 5476. He was formerly the defensive assistant for the Atlanta Falcons. In 2010 he won the Super Bowl with the Saints against the Colts 31-17.

Before coaching at the NFL level, Lombardi has coached Mercyhurst College, Bucknell University, the Virginia Military Institute, and the University of Dayton. He even coached for the New York/New Jersey Hitmen in the one year of the XFL. Lombardi played tight end and also played lacrosse while attending the United States Air Force Academy, from which he graduated in 1994.[1]
