James Frederic Root (August 17, 1931 – May 26, 2003) was a professional American football quarterback in the National Football League . He played two seasons for the Chicago Cardinals (1953, 1956).
Root then coached college football at the University of New Hampshire and the College of William & Mary , compiling a 57–62–2 record in 12 seasons.
