Jerome Messam (born April 2, 1985) is a professional Canadian football running back for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the BC Lions. After being traded to the Edmonton Eskimos, he became the third Canadian running back since 1960 and the first since 2000 to rush for over 1000 yards while also winning the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian Award. Messam played college football for Graceland University.
Jerome Messam signed as a free agent by the BC Lions on May 14, 2010, who held his rights after he went undrafted in the 2008 CFL Draft. Messam carried the ball 23 times for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns.
In the off-season, Messam was traded from the Lions to the Edmonton Eskimos for a fifth round draft pick in the 2013 CFL Draft. Messam became the starting running back for the Eskimos in the 2011 CFL season. He became the first non-import player to record over 1000 yards rushing in a season since Sean Millington accomplished the same feat in 2000. Messam was named the Outstanding Canadian in the months of July and October and was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian at the end of the regular season. He was recognized by fans, Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) and CFL head coaches when he was awarded a spot on the 2011 CFL All-Star roster.
After being released by the Dolphins, Messam rejoined the Eskimos on August 30, 2012.
On February 15, 2012, it was announced that Messam had signed with the NFL's Miami Dolphins. He was released during the preseason on August 25, 2012.
Edmonton Eskimos (II)Edit
After spending half of the 2012 CFL season with the Miami Dolphins Messam returned to the crowded Eskimos' backfield which consisted of Hugh Charles and Cory Boyd. In nine games with the Eskimos Messam only recorded 168 yards rushing and one touchdown.
