Edward Kai Wang (simplified Chinese: 王凯; traditional Chinese: 王凱; pinyin: Wáng Kăi) (born March 12, 1987) is an American football offensive tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Virginia Tech and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 2010 NFL Draft.
High school career[]
Wang was born in Fairfax, Virginia. He attended Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, Virginia, where he was selected the Gatorade State Player of the Year in 2004.
College career[]
Wang attended Virginia Tech and was awarded 2009 All-ACC Second Team for his performance at left tackle for the Hokies. He was given the nickname, "Godzilla" due to his aggressive playing style, size, and Asian heritage.[1]
2010 NFL Draft[]
Wang was selected with the 9th pick in the 5th round (140th overall) by the Buffalo Bills.
NFL career[]
In the 2010 NFL season, Ed Wang was a reserve OL and played in 6 games, starting none. Wang was cut by the Buffalo Bills at the beginning of the 2011 season. [2]
Ed Wang announced on his Twitter page that he has signed with the Oakland Raiders on May 1, 2012.
On February 15, 2013, Ed Wang signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Personal[]
Wang's parents were both track and field athletes for China at the 1984 Summer Olympics. His younger brother David Wang also plays football for Virginia Tech.
Wang is the first ethnic Chinese player, that is not of mixed heritage, to be drafted by an NFL team,[3] and can speak Mandarin. Previous NFL players of mixed Chinese descent include Walter Achiu, Timmy Chang, Patrick Chung and Kailee Wong.[4]
