Blake Gideon (born July 25, 1989) is an American football safety and current member of the Denver Broncos. A former University of Texas standout, Gideon started all 52 games during his career which ranks second in school history.[2]
High school
Gideon was a two-time all-state selection at Leander High School, who also lettered in baseball and track and field. He recorded 300 tackles, 10 INTs, six forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and 14 TDs in his three years as a starter.
College career
Gideon started all 52 games during his Texas career at safety. His 52 consecutive starts rank second-most at Texas. Named to the 2011 Jim Thorpe Award watch list. A four-time honorable mention All-Big 12 selection. Posted 276 tackles (166 solo), 10 INTs, 20 PBU, two sacks, eight TFL, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a blocked punt for his career. It has been said that he is a coach on the field.
On November 8th, 2008 Blake Gideon dropped a guaranteed interception versus the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the 4th quarter. The Longhorns were the #1 team in the country while Texas Tech was ranked 7th. With 8 seconds left in the game, and Texas winning by a score of 33-32, Graham Harrell's pass was deflected in the air and slowly fell into Blake Gideon's arms and immediately dropped the would be game ending interception. Graham Harrell then threw a TD pass to Michael Crabtree to win the game, and ruining the Longhorn's chances of going to the National Championship game.
Pro career
Gideon went undrafted in 2012 NFL Draft and was signed as a free agent by the Arizona Cardinals on April 30, 2012. He completed training camp with the Cardinals but was waived on August 21. On October 9 he was signed by the Broncos to their practice squad.
