Alex Boone (born May 4, 1987) is a guard for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. He played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Early years[]
Boone played high school football at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio.
College career[]
He played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes. A four-year starter for the Buckeyes (2005–08), Boone was a two-time All Big Ten selection (2nd team in 2007, 1st team in '08). In his four years, the Buckeyes were 41-8 and captured four Big Ten titles and played in four BCS Bowl appearances including back-to-back National Championship games (2006 & '07).
Professional career[]
Boone went undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft, at least partially due to concerns about alcohol abuse.[1]
San Francisco 49ers[]
After being signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an unrestricted free agent following the 2009 NFL Draft, he was released on the final day of roster cuts. He was subsequently signed to the practice squad. He was signed to the active roster on January 6, 2010. In the 2012 season he exceeded expectations by becoming a starter, and by performing at or near Pro Bowl caliber levels.[2] One journalist called Boone one of the most underpaid players in the NFL.[3]
On November 25, 2012, during a game at New Orleans, he was kicked in the back of the head by the Saints’ Brodrick Bunkley. Bunkley was ejected from the game because of that kick.[1]
Personal life[]
Boone was convicted of driving under the influence in 2006[4] and was arrested on February 1, 2009, after allegedly jumping on car hoods, yanking on a tow truck cable and trying to break a window.[5]
