The Alabama–Georgia football rivalry is a college football rivalry[1][2][3] game between the Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama and the Bulldogs of the University of Georgia.

History[]

The two southern schools first met in 1895 in Columbus, Georgia.[4] Georgia defeated Alabama by a score of 30–6.[5] After another Georgia win along with a tie and two Alabama victories, the teams tied in both 1907 and 1908.[6] Georgia embarked upon the first of the rivalry's five five-game win streaks, defeating the Tide every year from 1910–1913 and again in 1916.[7] Alabama had its own five-game winning streak against the Bulldogs in the 1920s, winning every contest from 1922–1926.[8] Both schools were charter members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 1933.[9][10] The third five-game winning streak occurred from 1949–1953, with the Tide winning all five contests.[7] The fourth and final tie in the series occurred in 1954, with both teams locked at 0.[6] The rivalry's fifth and final five-game win streak occurred from 2008–Present, again with Alabama winning all contests.[11]

Since the SEC split into two divisions in 1992,[12] Alabama and Georgia have only faced off intermittently, with Alabama (of the West division) playing Tennessee of the East division every year and Georgia (of the East division) facing off against Auburn of the West division annually.[13] Since the SEC's scheduling format allows each team one permanent cross-divisional opponent and one rotating cross-divisional opponent every year, the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs only see each other in the regular season every several years.[14] Since 1992, Alabama holds a 7–3 record over Georgia.[15] The teams squared off in the 2012 SEC Championship Game on December 1, 2012 in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia, with the winner likely to play for the national championship.[16] In a thrilling game, Alabama defeated Georgia by a score of 32–28.[17] Another high-stakes matchup between the squads occurred on January 8, 2018.[18] In the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Alabama overcame a 13-point deficit to defeat Georgia by a score of 26–23 in an overtime classic to clinch its 17th national championship in the program's long and storied history.[19] The following season, in the 2018 SEC Championship Game, Georgia led 28–14 with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter, only to see Alabama once again rally to win 35–28.[20]
