In their history, the Axemen Canadian football teams have appeared in four Vanier Cup national championships, winning two of those in 1979 and in 1981. Recently, the Axemen had their most success in the 2005, 2006 and 2011 seasons, when the teams finished first in the AUS and reached the Uteck Bowl all three years.
A low point to the program came in 2007-2009, which become known to those associated with the program as the "Keith Lockwood Era". Lockwood a junior college All-American for Harbor Junior college in California was only able to win 4 games in 3 years as the teams starting quarterback. Many believe that Lockwood was not suited to the Canadian brand of football as he had below average arm strength, and a lack of mental toughness.
