Playing as a member of the Big Ten Conference (Big 10), the team was led by head coach Bill Mallory, in his fifth year, and played their home games at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana. They finished the season with a record of eight wins, three losses and one tie (8–3–1 overall, 5–3 in the Big 10) and with a victory over South Carolina in the Liberty Bowl.
